Nasal breathing plays a big part in my own training, and I encourage my clients and athletes to explore it too—particularly at low to moderate intensities. That passion led me to found AIRFORGE, my nasal strip brand, to help make nasal breathing feel easier during training and recovery. It brings together two things I’m passionate about: breathing and movement.
So, why does nasal breathing matter?
Your nose filters, warms and humidifies the air you breathe. Breathing through it also carries naturally produced nitric oxide from your nose and sinuses into your lungs, where it helps regulate blood vessel widening and blood flow.
What does CO₂ have to do with oxygen?
Carbon dioxide is more than a waste gas. It helps regulate blood flow and helps haemoglobin release oxygen to the tissues that need it—including your working muscles. This oxygen release is known as the Bohr effect.
Does taking bigger breaths mean getting more oxygen?
Not necessarily. Breathing more than your body needs can lower CO₂ levels and make oxygen less readily released from haemoglobin. Nasal breathing can encourage a more controlled breathing pattern, particularly at rest and during easier exercise. Mouth breathing is a normal response as exercise intensity increases.
Struggle to breathe comfortably through your nose?
AIRFORGE Nasal Strips gently lift the sides of your nose, helping open the nasal passages so nasal breathing can feel easier. A simple addition to your training and recovery kit—with no magnets or sprays.
